Wow!  What a week we experienced.  All the rain provided some major moments of excitement…when was the last time we all saw hail?!?  Thank you families for sending students with rain gear and helping us navigate all the indoor time.  We know your children missed playing outside all week and hope the upcoming long weekend provides plenty of time outside.  We will see you all back here on Tuesday 1/16.

Just like that, we are rolling into 2023 and saying goodbye to 2022. This fall has been a memorable one for all of us. As I continue to get to know each of you and your children, I am humbled by the daily hellos, thank you’s and words of encouragement I hear. Whether those words are to your own child, their teacher, other staff or myself, I feel lucky to be in a community of adults that want the best for their children and work with our school to make their experience the best it can be.

I hope during this holiday season, your family can enjoy spending time together, laughing together and enjoy some quiet from the busy school days. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Another magical week at Ocean View. A huge thank you to Mr. Ray, our librarian and the parent volunteers that supported the school book fair. We appreciate you coming by and ordering books for your children and supporting our school. This week, one of our 4th grade classes had the pleasure of being visited by a magician. They had a great time and learned some new tricks.

Our students continue to lead in their own learning with the help of our amazing teachers. 5th graders conducted a Stop Waste Audit at our school and they discussed how to proceed with a waste reduction and prevention campaign or Ocean View. Students K-5th grade were able to see the amount of waste that was collected during lunch and we are all taking proactive steps to reduce and recycle. We hope you feel motivated to talk about waste reduction at home too.

During the season of giving thanks, I would like to say thank you to all of you Ocean View families for participating in parent conferences. Your continued support and communication with teachers is important to students’ academic success. Thank you to the PTA and Ms. May Beckhusen for providing classes with ice cream parties for walking and earning money at our Walkathon. Thank you to our wonderful teachers and staff, for all of their hard work and commitment to making Ocean View the very best.

Fall Festival donations and walkathon winners were treated with an Ice Cream Sundae party this week and the parties for remaining classrooms will continue next week. We are still marveling at how supportive our OV community is and want to thank all of you parents for everything you do for Ocean View.

Prior to the start of the school week, our amazing PTA spearheaded by Ms. Rebecca Sprenger, put on the Fall Festival last weekend. What a day of walking, bouncing, dancing, food and fun. Thank you to all the parent and teacher volunteers who made the weekend event such a success. Our OV and Albany community at large really showed up to support our school and we raised upwards of $22,000.00. Way to go Otters!

The school week also kicked off with a spirited Halloween parade and class festivities. Thank you, parents, for respecting our parade route and cheering on all of our students. Students and teachers had a blast seeing all of your smiling faces in the crowd.

Many thanks to Familias Latinas de Albany and our parent volunteer, Annette Mercedes for setting up our Dia de Los Muertos Ofrenda. We appreciate your contributions in making this a new tradition at OV.

Our weeks just continue to be full of celebration, cooperation and learning. Many students had the privilege of learning about Diwali and this beautiful celebration. Thank you, families, for sharing about yourselves with us.

And finally, some of our 5th grade students spent last weekend building an OV Sandcastle for the LEAP Sandcastle Classic. Thank you, 5th grade teachers, for spearheading this fun event for students and families.

We had a fun day of singing, laughing and unity on Unity Day. Thank you for sending your students in orange and expressing the importance of acceptance. This week, we also participated in the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill where students learned to “Drop, cover and hold.” The school evacuated their rooms in 3 minutes and all students were accounted for in 10 minutes. Way to go Otters!

We had another great week at Ocean View. TK-3rd grade teachers had a fun informational assembly from our Albany Firefighters. They all learned about calling 911 and what to do in case of a fire. Some of you may have even been asked to share where your smoke alarms are at home and what your safety plan is. Next week students will participate in the Great Shake Out Earthquake Drill. They will learn to drop, cover, and hold on tight. We want to thank you in advance for having conversations with your students about home and school safety.

We also saw a large number of families walk, roll, and stroll to school on Wednesday. Thank you for participating in this event and remember to bring locks for your bikes and scooters to ensure they are secured at school.
