Room Parent Interest Form

What does a room parent do?

Room parents are the main line of communication between their classroom’s parents/guardians and the Ocean View PTA. They help us get important information to their class, solicit volunteers for PTA events, arrange holiday and appreciation gifts for teachers, and remind families of upcoming fundraisers, events, and activities. Room parents mainly do this by sending class emails.

Room parents sometimes help arrange informal outside-of-school get togethers for the class, but this is not expected. Also, depending on the teacher and their needs, some room parents assist teachers in other ways (but this is all worked out between the teacher and the room parent).

What is the time commitment?

The basic job of the room parent takes up very little time, on average 30–60 minutes each month. Mostly, this position involves sending out an email with info from the PTA a few times a month, encouraging their class’s parents and guardians to get involved. Organizing class gifts for teachers during holidays and Teacher Appreciation Week can take a bit more time—but then again, this all depends on what the class decides they’d like to do for their child’s teacher.

What happens after I sign up to be a room parent?

Once you commit and we’ve confirmed this with you, we will include you on an email list. We’ll send you information we’d like you to share with the parents and guardians in your class. Teachers will communicate directly with you to discuss their needs. You will have our support and assistance.
